Dr. Meir Rosenne

            Dr Meir Rosenne is one of Israel’s most distinguished jurists and scholars of  international law. He was born in Jasy, Romania, on February 19,1931 and emigrated to Israel in 1944.
            A member of the Israel Chamber of Advocates since 1969, Dr Rosenne received his Baccalaureate in International Relations from the University of Paris  (Sorbonne) in 1953, followed by his LL.M and Ph.D (with honors) in International Law from the Sorbonne in 1957. Dr Rosenne graduated from the Institut des Hautes Etudes Internationales in 1960. Dr Rosenne served as Senior Lecturer on International Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Faculty of Law, as well as at the Law Faculty of Tel Aviv University and the University of Haifa.
            Dr Rosenne joined the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1953 and served as Consul of Israel in New York from 1961 to 1967. In 1969 he was appointed Coordinator and Legal Advisor of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission. In 1971, Dr Rosenne became Legal Advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the rank of Ambassador. In his capacity as Legal Advisor, Dr Rosenne represented the State of Israel at numerous international organizations and agencies, including the International Conference on Civil Aviation, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and International Committee of the Red Cross (Geneva Convention Protocols) and was a member of the Israel Delegation to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as the Israel Delegation to Geneva Peace Talks, 1973.
            Among his most important accomplishments was the role he played as Legal Advisor to the State of Israel during the Camp David, Israel-Egyptian Peace Negociations where he was one of the principal framers of the Camp David Accords. Dr Rosenne also served as legal advisor to various Israel-United States and Israel-Syrian negociations.
            In 1979, Dr Rosenne was appointed Israeli Ambassador to France, where he served until 1983, when he became Israel’s Ambassador to the United States of America. Following his retirement from the Foreign Service in 1987, Dr Rosenne was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the Worldwide Israel Bonds Organization. During his tenure (1989-1994), Israel Bonds raised more than US $ 5 billion in investments in Israel.
            Dr Rosenne currently is a senior partner in the leading Israel law firm of Balter, Guth, Aloni & Co, specializing in international business and public international law. He is currently a member of the Board of Governors of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem,
a member of the Board of Trustees of Ben Gurion University. He is a member of the American Society of International Law and the Association Française de Droit Comparé.
            Dr Rosenne is also a member of the Board of Directors, IDB Holdings Ltd. Member, Board of Directors and Chairman of the Audit Committee, Jerusalem Bank. He is the author of numerous articles in the New York Times, International Herald Tribune, and various French and Canadian newspapers.
            On May 15,2000 and by Decree of the French Republic President, Dr Rosenne has been made Commander in the National Order of the Legion of Honour.
