V. Responses in the Turkish
Parliament
and the Arab Press
to the Struma Tragedy
Regarding the response of public opinion to sinking of
the Struma, on April 20, 1942, in the course of a discussion on the budget in
the Turkish parliament, an objection was raised to the publication by the
Turkish News Agency of the response, on March, 12, of the Jewish Agency to the
Struma tragedy. The Turkish premier responded that Turkey had no responsability
for the tragedy and that it could not be expected to serve as a refuge for
people who were undesirable elsewhere.
Reports in the Arab Press (Al-Difaa, March 13, 1942) came out in the defense of
Lord Cranborne, the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs (1940-1942), who
stopped the debate on the Struma tragedy in the House of Lords, and Sir Harold
Mac-Michael, High Commissioner of Palestine for his comments on th Struma
tragedy.
The Commander of the British Navy was quoted as suggesting that the passengers
on the Struma had sabotaged the boat intentionally.
