The Center for Jewish Art was established at the Hebrew University in 1979 to carry out research, documentation, education and publication in the field of Jewish Art. The Jerusalem Index of Jewish Art, which was established ten years earlier in 1969, is the Center’s major tool and one of the most innovative projects at the Hebrew University.
The Index is the world's most comprehensive database of Jewish art. It was created to include systematic documentation of all extant Jewish art around the world, from antiquity to the contemporary period, thus directly contributing to the preservation of the Jewish artistic heritage.
Documentation includes photographs; descriptions; iconographical, historical and bibliographical data; and architectural plans and 3-D computer models of synagogues and other sites.
The Index's five sections are:
Ancient Jewish Art
Hebrew Illuminated Manuscripts
Ceremonial Objects and Synagogue Furnishings
Modern Jewish Art
Architecture of Synagogues and Jewish Monuments
The Index has 5 interlinked sub-databases:
Iconographical & Literary References, listing the iconographical components of a subject as well the relevant literary sources
Objects
Hallmarks
Biographies
Bibliographies

A new software program is being developed in order to realize the Index’s full potential as a research tool and to make it accessible to scholars, educators, researchers, curators, collectors and conservationists worldwide. The new program allows for the integration of images and text and includes sophisticated cross-referencing and retrieval systems. Once this computer project is completed, the Index will be the largest “virtual” Jewish museum in the world.
